 ST ANTHONY
Alex Lavender: After leaving school, I did what everyone else did and struggled to choose between South America and South-East Asia. After settling on (and completing) the latter, I went to Loughborough to study Human Biology and fail at sport. Three years later, with a perfectly adequate degree and no clue as to what to do, I headed to London and am now working in business intelligence sales. For those dying to know more about me, here’s a quickfire Q&A. Where do you live? Fulham. Hobbies? Piano, wine, squash. Favourite food? Lasagne. Favourite drink? Rosé. Best London musical? It’s got to be Hamilton. Future? Marital bliss, apparently!
Edward Lofts: After leaving Oundle and wandering around India for a bit, I graduated from Exeter University with a degree in Sociology. Following that, I moved to London to pursue a career in healthcare, helping to market and run private hospitals. I currently work for the Hospital Corporation of America.
William Lowe: On graduating from King’s College London with an MA in Intelligence and International Security, I started working in private intelligence. I currently work for a software consultancy based in London, providing an intelligence collection and analysis platform to government and corporate clients globally. Outside of work, I enjoy bouldering and photography.
David Makin: After leaving Oundle, I took a gap year travelling around South America, before going to Bristol University to study Biochemistry. After graduating, I went to City University in London to do a master’s in Health Economics, before starting a career in market access consulting in the pharmaceutical industry. I worked for four years at GfK, before being hired by an old boss of mine to set up a new strategy and access initiative in life sciences at BearingPoint. Away from work, I kitesurf whenever it’s windy and play golf or go cycling when it’s not.
Charles Mak: Since leaving Oundle, I have studied Psychology at the University of Warwick, before taking a slight detour to do an MSc degree in Management at the Warwick Business School. I returned to Hong Kong after graduation and decided to go into a people-facing, solution- providing role, leading me into recruitment. I currently work for a UK-based firm in Hong Kong named Spencer Ogden, which is one of the fastest-growing recruitment businesses across the globe. I joined through its graduate academy and in five years have progressed into a managerial function, overseeing the technology recruitment practice for North China. Although I have focused primarily on my career in the past few years, I have also been travelling around the world – from a weekend in Phuket to a remote boat trip in Bali; from snorkelling in Fiji to a three-week South America trip across Peru, Chile and Easter Island. My wife, whom I met eight years ago while studying in the UK, also loves travelling and we are both semi- dedicated ‘foodies’. We tied the knot about a year and a half ago, and currently enjoy married life in one of the busiest cities in the world. It's been a long road since Oundle and I'm excited to see what the next 10 years have in store for us. Who knows? Different paths in life may even take me back to the great land of Britain eventually.
Christopher Owen: After completing a degree in Real Estate at the Royal
Agricultural College, I moved to London for six years and fulfilled my childhood dream of becoming a chartered surveyor. In that time I ventured into amateur stand-up comedy, got my hands on coveted Spurs season tickets and lived with three Oundle alumni/good friends – Ben Cossor (F 09), Andrew Pelton (Sc 09) and Mike Pelton (Sc 11). I am now living in Hertfordshire at my mum and dad's with girlfriend in tow (another childhood dream) and life is generally good.
Henry Pao: After completing a degree in Accounting & Finance at the University of Warwick, I returned to Hong Kong and started my career working for a Singapore-based craft spirits distributor and cocktail bar consultancy, before moving to Beijing in 2016. There I collaborated with another Old Oundelian, Leon Cai (Sc 08), and opened a craft cocktail bar of our own - The Black Moth. I am currently back in Hong Kong, working as a headhunter in the financial services technology sector and quietly planning my next foray into food and beverage.
Charlie Rose: Post Newcastle University, I went straight into an internship at Linford Christie's sports management company, Nuff Respect. This led to four or so years in the sports marketing industry at Hill+Knowlton Strategies. Since then I have decided to have a career change and ended up as a tanker broker for Genesis Shipbrokers in
