Chapter 8: Other balanced hands.


        Opening the bidding in notrump.


            As we learnt in the last chapter an opening 1NT shows hands that are
        balanced and 12-14 points.


            We open 2NT with balanced hand from 20-22 points.

        Opening with 15-19 and a balanced hand.


            First let us look at a chart of what to do and then discuss the reasons a
        little later.

                                    1NT        Pass with 15-16 bid 2NT with 17
                                2 of a new suit  2NT - forcing

                longest suit*                  other 4 card suit and then raise
          18-19                     1NT        bid 2NT with 17 - 18 and 3NT
                                               with 19
                                2 of a new suit  2NT - forcing
          20-22      2NT           This is a limit bid like the 1NT opening bid


           Learn these as they are the mainstay of your bidding.


        * Note: we have to discuss what longest suit means when you are 4-4-3-2.
        The answer can be learned by rote.
