Jermain’s netted goals for the Three Lions, but none were more important than this one, the only goal of the game to see his country through the group stage at the World Cup in South Africa.
England had drawn with the US and Algeria in their rst two games and that meant three points were needed against Slovenia in their nal match, or the tournament might come to a premature end for Fabio Capello’s squad.
Jermain had come o the bench in the game before but started for the rst time in the tournament against Slovenia, and the striker showed it was a wise selection.
On minutes James Milner’s wonderful curling cross was met sweetly on the volley by Jermain and from seven yards there was nothing the Slovenia ‘keeper could do to keep it out.
England were in front and the slender lead would be held until the full-time whistle.
The win sent England through, setting up an encounter with Germany in the knockout stages.
