E ective Approaches for Teaching Students with Dyslexia
Principles of Structured Literacy Instruction: How Structured Literacy is Taught
Simultaneous Multisensory (Multimodal)
Simultaneous multisensory (multimodal) approaches incorporate two or more modalities simultaneously. The nature of every oral and written language task requires integration of at least two sensory pathways:
• Copying: visual to kinesthetic-motor (for writing)
• Silent reading: visual to auditory (inner)
• Oral reading: visual to auditory to kinesthetic-
motor (for speech)
• Speaking: auditory (inner) to kinesthetic- motor (for speech)
System 44 Personalized Instructional Software and Teacher-Facilitated Instruction
System 44 employs Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a set of principles that promotes the creation of exible goals, methods, materials, and assessments to accommodate all learners’ di erences. Its multimedia, multisensory instruction provides multiple means of representation in printed materials and software with digital, audio, and visual support. Students have many opportunities to use visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile modalities, including visual and tactile experiences with mouth positions to aid pronunciation and building words on the computer and with letter tiles. In addition, the multisensory instructional approach provides students with daily opportunities to view, listen, speak/record, and write. The multisensory approach in System 44 includes videos, images, graphics, sounds, audiobooks, print components, and manipulatives, thus o ering multiple entry points for all learners to access and learn content. System 44 further provides multiple means of expression to o er students alternative ways to show what they know.
System 44 uses the FASTT model ( uency and automaticity through systematic teaching with technology) to help students move information from working to long-term memory. Adaptive pacing of practice in the FASTT model moves students to automaticity. The multisensory approach in System 44 further improves recall
by combining audio and visual support. For example, every new word in the technology is linked with a picture and a context sentence, both of which help learners commit the word meaning and underlying concept to memory.
The Word Building Kit includes a magnetic board and letter tiles to support kinesthetic-tactile learners.
