Germany is experiencing the revival of a still small but vocal
movement of neo-Nazis.

But the movement is not limited to Germany. Anti-Semitism
is also found in Russia, where revived nationalism since the
demise of the Soviet Union is restoring ancient negative feelings
about the Jews. There is also a certain continuing level of anti-
Semitism under the surface in the rest of Europe and in America
as well. One way in which this new Nazism is expressed is in
the denial of the historicity of the European Holocaust.

Denial of the Holocaust

Some of the blatant anti-Semites have decided that the
specter of the Nazi Holocaust must be expunged from the history
books. Apparently, they feel that if people believe the systematic
murder of six million Jews actually happened under Hitler, they
will shrink in horror from any revival of the Nazi viewpoint.
Thus, the neo-Nazis and their sympathizers try to diminish the
reality of the Holocaust, or deny its existence altogether. They
will say that only a few thousand Jews died in the camps, and
the camps themselves were not nearly so heinous as has been
reported.

They were just detention cells for all those who had
organized opposition to the regime or were, in fact, criminals.
The idea that millions upon millions of Jewish men, women and
especially children were collected from all over Europe, hauled
in railroad cattle cars, deposited in extermination camps, made
to be slave laborers, experimented upon, starved, gassed and
cremated is purposely ridiculed and explained away as
journalistic exaggeration.

Those of us who lived through World War II saw the
evidence of the death camps as they were liberated by the
American Army, have these pictorial images etched on our
minds. We cannot imagine anybody attempting to deny their
reality. But there is a new generation coming along who did not
live through all of that awful period of discovery. Many of them
cannot believe that this kind of bestial cruelty could exist in a
refined, educated, industrial western nation like Germany. They
are open prey to these neo-Nazi revisionists who tiy to describe
