SECTION II:
STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK

2.1 Strategic Guidelines
This strategic framework provides guidelines on the approach and initiatives that will be undertak- en to address some of the existing and emerging challenges facing the agricultural, natural, and ur- ban communities in south Florida. In creating the guidelines, we consider these challenges; our mis- sion, vision, and goals; and medium-term planning and decision-making. Among the distinguishing features are three key “guardrails” for focusing our efforts and keeping these aligned to our mandate:
1. We will promote an approach that focuses on addressing the issues impacting the productiv- ity and sustainability of agriculture and natu- ral resources at the local levels, but with broad implications for other regions, thus enabling us to have a local focus with a global reach.
2. We will focus on a few key areas of agriculture, natural resources, and the environment in
which we have a specialized and comparative advantage within UF and the state of Florida.
3. Our work will complement and align with those of the other RECs and Departments of UF/IFAS for an optimum contribution to the achieve- ment of UF’s overall objectives.
The strategic framework has three components: (1) our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis of TREC; (2) our vision, mission, and core values; and (3) our key stake- holders.
2.2 SWOT Analysis of TREC
To develop the framework for our plan we assessed the external and internal environments in which we will operate over the next six years. The results of our assessment allowed us to focus our strengths on the opportunities, while being mindful of the threats we face and address our weaknesses. 2.2 SWOT Analysis of TREC.
