TREC will pursue five broad-based Strategic Priorities that are fundamental to its vision, mis- sion, and future success in achieving its Strategic Goal. The first strategic priority is aimed specifi- cally at executing the mission of TREC, while the other four are aimed at supporting our mission.
The first Strategic Priority is to enhance the Quality of TREC’s Programs in Research, Ex- tension, and Teaching. The aim is to ensure that TREC continues to develop and deliver high qual- ity programming across the three missions of the University in research, extension, and teaching that is at the cutting edge of science and educa- tion. Accordingly, TREC will reorganize and con- solidate its existing programs into three high im- pact core programs: Agricultural Innovation, Natural Resource Conservation, and Climate and Environmental Stewardship. These pro- grams will provide invaluable support to local growers, homeowners, and other stakeholders by providing science-based solutions to solve real community challenges, solutions that will be per- tinent internationally to other tropical regions, thus enabling us to have local focus with a global reach. The outcomes of the core programs are a more resilient and profitable agricultural industry in south Florida, providing the tools, technologies, and resources needed to address natural resource challenges and develop sustainable solutions for stakeholders, including natural resource manag- ers, landowners, and government officials. These outcomes will be pursued with an increased public awareness of climate change projections, and the adoption of policies that improve the resilience of ecosystems and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change.
The second Strategic Priority is to develop a Sus- tainable Resource Base for Research, Extension, and Teaching. The outcomes of this priority are a noticeable diversity in sources and an increase in the quantity of funds obtained from non-tra- ditional sources, a vibrant and engaged graduate student/postdoc community, and a marked im- provement in TREC’s facilities and equipment to fully support high-quality research and extension programs.
