Worshiping freely
The congregation of this Church was originally formed at St Anna’s Lutheran Church in Augsburg, Germany in 1733. The
congregation remains active today. In pursuit of their faith the Salzburgers organized the first Sunday School (1734) in
Georgia, then constructed the first church building of any denomination. From 1767 to 1769 the Jerusalem Lutheran
Church was built from bricks made of clay from the area. Some of the original panes of glass can be seen in the
windows of the Church. It is is the oldest continuous worshipping Lutheran Church in America and as the oldest church
in Georgia is also the oldest public building because of it’s use as the capitol at one time.
