they had received it, but they still needed to be strengthened to enable them endure the tribulation in the world. It reminds us of what He said about the certainty that we would face tribulation on the earth but should be cheerful because He had overcome the world (John 6:63). He had prayed to secure our future!
Again, recall the frontal attack that the devil planned for Peter and his disciple colleagues. He sought to “sift them as wheat!” His plan was to overwhelm them by the pressures of the world so that they would fall out of the faith. Jesus revealed that He had ‘prayed’ for Peter that His faith would not fail, not even that He would not fall into temptation.
Luke 22:31-34, NKJV
And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
