schedule. I believe that Jesus prayed for His disciples as a matter of routine to secure their lives, and it was easy for Him to pray for Peter and others not to fall when the plan of the devil to dislodge them from the faith was revealed.
The charge that was given to Peter to strengthen his brethren also applies to us. It must be taken to be as real as if Jesus had spoken to each of us directly. That is what He did to secure each of us, and that is what we must do to ensure that others are secured.
If you read John 17, you will find Jesus saying that He was not praying for His disciples at that point alone but for those of us who would come to believe in Him through the words and work of the disciples. He took responsibility for both His ‘children and the generations after them.’ Again, this should be the focus of our prayers.
We are Responsible for the Growth of the Church
By praying for those we have immediate responsibility over and their generations to come, we are securing them all in the faith, and by implication, also securing the continued growth (albeit organic) of the Church. Imagine if each of us who benefitted from the prayer
