united, virtually inseparable and share not just the flesh but also the same blood. They forge a new identity, one shaped by what each part supplies and they come under the influence of one Spirit, the Spirit of God.
Under the new arrangement, where flesh is shared, blood is the same, and a new whole body has emerged, head and body become interdependent, although each have their respective roles prescribed by God, the author of their union. Neither head nor body can do as they like from this point. Rather, they must operate in the consciousness of their new identity and according to a new set of rules that seeks to make them better off now that they are together compared to what they were in their individual identities.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
