Masego is killin’ the game right now. This past
September he released the album Lady Lady.
While it’s a change of pace from his other work
it’s also that showcases his talents and gives
people a chance to understand his appeal. Before
this album, Masego made sure his saxophone
was at the forefront of his music. This album
shows his talents as a creator and composer.
Among the hard, intrusive, often political sounds of other artists, Masego takes us back to
simple sounds that blend together for some easy listening. Compared to his other work,
Lady Lady is passive. This album is the background soundtrack to an intimate party.
Masego is still having fun but he’s also showing growth and progression; his music is the
sound of a party but this album shows a touch of higher class, the kind where you drink
     with your pinkies up.

Lady Lady takes Masego’s work to the next level. It closely follows his style of music,
which he calls Trap House Jazz. While this album might have a different sound, compared
to his other work, it shows that there’s more going on in his head. His other work like
Loose Thoughts and Pink Polo gives stronger notes of Jazz, Lady Lady focuses on bass,
unique beats, and sprinkles of Masego’s saxophone work.

Throughout this album, you can hear notes of his influences, but Masego creates sounds
that he can proudly call his own. He blends all kinds of sounds to create his own brand of
music, showing complete control and creativity throughout. Masego understands how to
craft a song but also that an album should follow a theme. The title track, Lady Lady,
showcases notes of influences from groups like Outkast, sounds from the Motown era,
and a saxophone skillset he hasn’t fully tapped into until now.

While Masego already has a wealth of his own music and contributions to others like
VanJess and DJ Jazzy Jeff, it seems like he’s just started to gain recognition and fully invest
in his own work and creativity. Currently finishing up a tour through the early months of
the 2019 year, you might not have the same chance to see him play live, which I highly
recommend. However, it’s a great time to start getting into the music he has created and
feature him at all your upcoming parties.

Masego’s newest album Lady Lady deserves a 9 out of 10.
