minutes. Inside, the room felt like a 5 star hotel: cerulean carpet, crisp white walls, and a granite counter with smiling attendants. We paid our fee and received a watch. The watch did not tell time of course but rather was the key to our locker, and a makeshift credit card. If you wanted food, drinks, etc. you would simply brandish your watch onto a keypad and your bill would be automatically attached when you checked out.
Technology is truly astounding.
In addition to the Blade Runner watch, we also received a yellow t shirt so garrish; one would completely rethink its connection to the smiley face. The T shirt said “WI SPA” in bold black type, and we were told to change into them when we got to our lockers. Jaundice shirts in tow, we also managed to pick up the single least flattering khaki shorts possible. The same “WI SPA” adorned the right pant leg.
Within minutes of receiving our uniform, the stripping commenced. All around me my friends had barely bat an eye at the thought of exposing so much bare skin. I, diametrically opposed, was almost instantly transported back to every single year involving gym class, where I would play a game of “how fast can I show the bare minimum amount of skin”.
None of the other women noticed my hastiness, nor did they comment on how I managed to take off my underwear completely underneath the khaki atrocities. Last, but certainly not least, we also received flimsy, disposable white slippers.
The Spa had five saunas, a lookout deck, and a restaurant all inside. We padded our way to the restaurant and waited with baited breath as the delicious, spicy smell infiltrated our nostrils. The rice cakes were hot, cheway, and tasted even better than they smelled.
The Five Saunas included: the Jade Room, Clay Ball Room, Salt Room, the Hottest Sauna, and the Cold Room. One of us, Victoria, had been here before and gleefully guided us from room to room. The Salt Room conducted heat too well and had very jagged slate; you almost always had to keep your calves up while you laid on the floor.
The Jade Room was peaceful, so much so that one snobbish woman insisted on reading in there. While I did not know her, she grimaced at the mere utterance of anyone speaking and thus interrupting her precious
