       THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EDUCATIONAL
PROGRAMME TO ENHANCE THE UTILISATION OF
       CERVICAL CANCER SERVICES AMONG WOMEN
OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE IN THE OTJOZONDJUPA
       REGION, NAMIBIA
The doctoral study was undertaken and completed under the
supervision of Prof. Hans Justus Amukugo of the University of Namibia
as the Main-Supervisor and Dr Kristofina Amakali as the Co-Supervisor.
The purpose of this study was to develop an educational programme
to enhance the utilisation of cervical cancer services among women
of reproductive age in the Otjozondjupa region, Namibia. The study
revealed that most of the respondents show limited knowledge
regarding the prevention of risk factors for cervical cancer, and
the importance of screening, treatment, and availability of cervical
cancer services. The study further revealed that there is a low uptake
of cervical screening among the respondents. Additionally, the study
revealed that there were individual, institutional and community
challenges and barriers that influence the attitudes of women
to uptake cervical cancer screening services. These challenges
include the perception of not being at risk for cervical cancer, the
provision of cancer screening services by male service providers and
economic constraints to accessing health facilities. An educational
programme was developed based on five theories, namely: practice-
orientated theory, programme development theory, cyclic curriculum
development model, experiential learning theory and model on
       andragogy.

The guidelines were developed in terms of the objectives to address
the low utilisation of cervical cancer screening services in health
facilities. Based on the study findings, recommendations were made
in terms of nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research.
