CANDIDATE:
NGHIPANDULWA Lovisa
CANDIDATE’S DISSERTATION
A TRAINING PROGRAMME TO SUPPORT SOCIAL
WORKERS IN THE FACILITATION OF FIELD EDUCATION
SUPERVISION
The doctoral study was undertaken and completed under the
supervision of Prof Janet Ananias (University of Namibia) as main
supervisor, and Prof Pius Tanga, (University of Fort Hare, South Africa)
as co-supervisor.
This study explored the needs, experiences, and current practices
of field supervision in the Khomas region of Namibia. The outcomes
indicate that field supervisors did not receive additional comprehensive
training in the broader facets of student supervision. This led to the
development of an evidence-based intervention programme to
empower social workers in all facets of field supervision, based on
Knowles’ model of Andragogy. The candidate further incorporated
additional learning materials and practical learning activities to
stimulate further thinking. The programme was designed to be
implemented in the form of a workshop, covering an estimated 39
notional hours, via a blended mode of facilitation.
This study emerging knowledge is solidified through the developed
training programme, as well as description of unique experiences of
field supervisors and student social workers from a Namibian context.
The study’s recommendations underscore the importance of CPD
and post-qualifying training in field supervision, and that a supervision
framework for Namibia need to be developed urgently, to re-engineer
field supervision processes.
