P. 9
Statement by the
Chancellor
H.E. Dr. Nangolo Mbumba,
Vice President of the Republic of Namibia
and UNAM Chancellor
s Chancellor of the premier University in Namibia, I am honoured to reflect on the strategic direction
and activities of the University of Namibia during 2018. The University of Namibia since its establishment,
has made tremendous efforts to enable many Namibians to have access to higher education and
Aopportunities that were not easily available to many before independence in 1990.
Many young Namibians today are studying in various critical fields such as in Accounting, Agriculture, Economics
and Management Sciences, Education, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Geology, Health Sciences, and Law,
to mention just a few. As a result, Namibia through the University of Namibia has produced Medical Doctors,
Geologists and other experts critically contributing to the national development of Namibia and to addressing
societal challenges. These are being done from the position of knowledge application through the knowledge
and skills that the experts have acquired from the University of Namibia.
I am extremely proud, as the Chancellor of the University, about the critical and leading role of the University
in contributing to human capital development in Namibia, SADC region, Africa, and the rest of the world,
also, in producing graduates with the requisite knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes, and who can function
effectively in culturally diverse, and globally competitive contexts.

The University during the reporting period, implemented the Strategic Plan for 2016 2020. As contained in the
Strategic Plan, the Plan is intended to take the University into the future with a common vision and hope by
focusing on improving operational effectiveness, improving service delivery, contributing to positive learning
experiences for the students, improving research and innovation excellence, including attracting research
funding, and improving relations with both internal and external stakeholders. In essence, the Strategic Plan is
intended to make UNAM responsive, adaptive, and resilient.
The Chancellorship of this institution is a great honour for me, and I would like to thank our former Chancellor,
H.E. Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba, for a job well done. I’m now looking forward to the future endeavours of our staff
and students .
