TEARS OF SUFFERING
1 THE PERSECUTION
Ugyen Dorji lived with his parents in a far-flung village,
ten miles east of Trashigang, the area famed for the
cultivation of abundant rice. He was the only child his
parents had. Despite their hard life, they gave their all to
the son for whom their love knew no bounds. They
carved out a modest existence, bound by firm filial
bonds. In the bosom of his caring parents, the boy felt
safe. He attended school and performed well enough for
a child from his social background; he topped the class
every year. Considering his outstanding performance, his
teachers took great pride and anticipated his future in a
high professional position. By the grace of heaven,
everything went well for a couple of years.
But when the cruel fate tarnished his blissful life one day,
his little world turned topsy-turvy. Like a bolt of
lightning, his father passed away without a sign of illness,
leaving behind a helpless widow and his tender son. Life
became hard for them who now struggled amidst
mounting adversities. To keep her son happy and to
