Kakadu National Park
Kakadu National Park is
located in the Northern
territory and is approximately
240km east of Darwin.
Wetlands such as Yellow
Water and Mamukala are
present in the park all year
round.
Yellow Water is a landlocked
billabong, home to an
extensive range of birds
including jacanas, egrets,
magpie geese and sea eagles
as well as other animals such
as crocodiles and buffalo.
Functioning of Wetlands
Fauna:
Crocodiles-
Ten thousand crocodiles live in the Kakadu
region (that is a tenth of all crocodiles in the
Northern territory).
The National park is home to both saltwater
and freshwater crocodiles.
Flatback turtles
Flat back turtles are located at the mouth of the
South Alligator River, where Kakadu meets the sea.
These turtles are listed as nationally vulnerable and
is the only marine turtle worldwide to be assessed
as ‘data deficient’- meaning that researchers do
not know enough about the species to tell whether
populations are declining, stable or increasing.
