               A. Preliminary Practice

In your daily life you often find people who need
your view on some issues. You need to express your stance
on something in the appropriate manners. Do you know how
                                               to do it very well?

 What is your view on the organic farming?
 I guess it’s very good way to decrease the use
                                                              of pesticide.

 Why is it important to control the use of
                                                                 pesticides?
 Personally, I believe that pesticides can affect
                                                               the natural balance.

                                                   Expressing Stance

Expressing a stance means you give your point of view against something. This is
almost like an opinion but they are both substantially rather different. A stance is more
assertive than opinion because a stance is about mental attitude.
Look at the following dialogue between Ayu and Ghita :
Ayu : Hi, Amira, do you know that our village has some organic farms?
Ghita : Yes, of course. I‟ve just knew it a week ago.
Ayu : Really? I‟ve just known it this morning.
Ghita : My father told me that some of my neighbors do organic farming.
Ayu : So, there will be no pesticide in the product. Do you think it‟s good?
Ghita : Yes, I think it is great because most pesticides are designed to be
toxic to their target pests and some substance can be harmful if used
improperly. What is your view on the use of pesticides?
Ayu : Well, I think we should, at least, manage the use of pesticides because
some pesticides affect non target animals such as fish and bees. They
                               affect the natural balance.
