Despite the new challenges, John’s Appliance and Bedding business has persevered. The business was forced to contend with five years of low sales in the aftermath of the country’s financial recession. It survived this setback by falling back on its repair, and scratch and dent division which were able to compensate for the lost revenue. Through it all, John remains the same fun-loving risk taker that traded in his spear gun years ago to start up his own business. His commitment to his customers is matched by his willingness to stand out in his advertising campaigns. John’s Appliance is widely known in the region, not only for their selection

and prices, but also for the zany commercials, which John appears in, sometimes in full costume.
John Hinton’s success story is indicative of a generation of independent appliance dealers throughout the country whose modest beginnings eventually morphed into a regional powerhouse, trusted by a legacy of loyal customers. His evolution from seller of used appliances, to hybrid dealer of new, and scratch and dent models, demonstrates his keen eye for what the consumer wants. John’s decision to come out
of the ocean and make his career on dry land appears to have paid off. YS
