A COLD CAN OF COKE AND A SNICKERS
Angela, affffectionately known as “Angie” to most friends and family.
“Kankela” if you really knew her.
What a lot of people may not know is Angela liked to listen to music. She had the latest reggae and pop records. To this day, I can still see the gold Bob Marley “Exodus” album and Jimmy Cliffff’s “The Harder They Come” label. Bunny
wailer, Third World and Peter Tosh were also some of her favorites.
I enjoyed playing her reggae albums and she had some disco ones too. Donna Summer, Evelyn Champagne King and Anita Ward to name a few. I played the disco ones as much as the reggae ones. I made sure to play them when she wasn’t home because I knew I was in for it if she came home and saw me playing them.
And who could forget the sweet
treats! Donuts, marble cake, upside
down pineapple cake, bundt plain
cake and peanut butter cookies. If
it didn’t meet her standards, we all were out of luck. Craig and I would always compete to see who could eat the most cake batter.
As I grew up, the relationship turned to admiration for Angela’s work ethic. She worked hard for a number of years at elections, carrying and moving those big black books. I could see her at her desk registering people to vote.
My greatest admiration however was watching Angela raise Ehrin and Kimmy as a single mother. Firm yet so loving. Softening when she became a Nana. It was no secret that she loved her grandkids. How can you not admire someone that tried to make a better life for her kids than what she had. Isn’t that what we all want as parents?
I never really got to say it to her but I always admired her grit. Never one to complain or make a big fuss and she went home the same way.
“Tek it easy. You deh home”
