Expressing numbers in ones and tens
The value of a digit depends on its place in the number.
A digit is any number from 0 to 9. The first place from
the right of the number is known as ones. The second
place is called tens.
Example 1 Write the place value of number 9.
Solution
Number 9 has only one digit. Hence 9 is in the ones
place.

Example 2 Write the place value of number 12.
Solution
Number 12 has two digits. The first place from the
right has 2 and second place has 1. Hence, 2 is in the
ones place and one in the tens place.
