4. THEME: The theme is the author’s main idea or purpose in the story.
Sometimes there might be more than one in a story. As you read the story,
try to figure out the theme and what opinion the author is trying to share
with you.

5. CONFLICT: The plot always contains a conflict or a struggle. It can be an
external one ; a fight or a disagreement between characters, between
characters and the environment or an internal one which is inside a
character’s mind. As you read the story, find out the conflict of the story
and notice whether the conflict is an external or internal one.

6. SENSORY DETAILS: Writers use sensory details to create images of five
senses- touch, taste, smell, sight and sound. For example to create the image of
taste the author of the story wrote, “ I said. I wanted another of those banana
splits. They were gorgeous.” As you read the story, note out the sensory details
into the chart below.
