International Buy Nothing Day - November 26th 2021
Most of us have heard about ‘Black Friday’, you know that day when many of the
shops do their best to convince us that they have lots of bargain stuff that we need
to have in our lives?!
Perhaps a lesser-known day that follows ‘Black Friday’ is ‘Buy Nothing Day’.
As the name suggests, this event was created to encourage us all to take a step back
from our wallets and think if we really need to consume as much as we do. Pretty
much everything we buy has an environmental impact and a carbon footprint, which
contributes to climate change. The carbon footprints of some items can really be
quite surprising...
A Pair of Shoes Bouquet of Dutch roses, lilies
11.5kg CO2e and Gypsophila from Kenya
32.3kg CO2e
A takeaway chicken curry for one person,
delivered in a plastic container
3kg CO2e
A 13 inch MacBook Pro
Takeaway latte in a disposable cup 326kg CO2e
662g CO2e
A Pair of Jeans
19kg CO2e
This year, we are linking with partners around Wales to promote a more sustainable
alternative to consumption and will be showcasing Welsh sustainable clothing
producers and other planet friendly choices. Look out for the #GreenFriday and join
us in a sustainable social media take over!
*CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent): the total climate change impact of all the greenhouse gases caused by an item.
