ISLA 240-01: Introduction to Media Arts and Technology

Course Description: This course offers students an introduction to Mass Media studies through an exploration of the following questions: what is the relationship between art, technology and media, and how have technological innovations been a key force in shaping that relationship? Part of our work will entail defining some key terms, including Art, Mass Media, branding and technology as well as narrative, documentary, syntax, semantics, transmedia, new media, analytics, homogenization, content creator vs. content consumer, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and . While we will devote some of our time toward reading and discussing works of media theory and learning the historical context of the technology for both old and new media. Within this course, we will begin to evaluate media globalization, and being both a responsible mass media creator and consumer. While exploring the different representational technologies, we will apply the knowledge in a hands-on creative Multi-Media Class Project that will implement the industry if Mass Media using contemporary technologies. Students who successfully complete this course will have developed a basic framework and critical vocabulary for understanding our current global multi-media environment and its history, as well as by participating within it as a literate consumer and producer of media arts and technologies.
