GRAPPLER Fall 2018
F ROM THE E DITORS
Now what? That’s what we asked ourselves after finishing Issue #1. How do we follow this up? This
must be the same feeling musicians and comedians get after their debut album or special. We cannot
begin to express our sincerest gratitude for all the interest and feedback we received from Issue #1.
It has been humbling experience. Just you reading this right now hits us right in the feel goods. In
the immortal words of Adam “Pacman” Jones, as told through Tom Segura, “Tell that muhfuckah I
appreciate ‘em.”
Every review, positive and negative, drove us to learn more, to try harder, to inspire. This became
our theme for Issue #2: Inspiration, more importantly, the perseverance to keep grinding when the
initial motivation fades; to put in the effort when dealing with adversity no longer seems worth the
struggle. This is something we learned from Christian Graugart. The Godfather of BJJ Globetrotters
answered our questions on what to do after publishing your world travels in an internationally-
circulated book. We’ve included a BJJ ruleset breakdown in this issue, comparing ADCC and IBJJF. This
is a simple reference tool intended for the average sports fan or new competitor. They should be used
as a reference to understand how points are being scored and infractions committed. We still advise
you pour into the sport on Google or YouTube to get a comprehensive understanding of moves and
strategy, to understand the game within the game and make it more fun to watch.
We tried to keep the second installment of our “Roll Thru” series concise, but we had such an
incredible time, and TK’s account is written so well, that we chose to present it in four chapters
instead. This will lay the backdrop for Rome’s video companion to follow later this month: we’re
just a group of friends who share the same passions and interests (and sense of humor and comedy-
movie quote database). We traveled to Thailand, spent $8 USD/night on lodging and shared incredible
interactions with strangers who are now companions in sweat. And we aren’t that different; you can
go there, too. Or Japan, or Brazil. Anywhere. Trust us, Ashleigh Force will lead you down the traveler’s
path. Would you rather be an internationally-known musician or world-class martial artist? Why not
be both? Matt Brunson did it, so why can’t you? We sat down with the lead guitarist from Crowbar to
discuss his thoughts on both.
We are inspired to do everything we can to make this brand succeed and bring you, our favorite
audience, insight into the grappling arts through content that will broaden your awareness and
understanding of different disciplines and cultures. The magazine is just the start. We recently updated
the website (www.grapplermag.com), check us out on social medial (@grapplermag), and if you really
want to be our best friend, visit the GoFundMe page as well (www.gofundme.com/grapplermag).
