WELCOME AND OPENING REMARKS
1. The Assistant Registrar/Syllabus and Curriculum Development Division (Assistant
Registrar/SCD) welcomed the Panel Members and thanked them for their commitment to participate
in the syllabus revision process. The Assistant Registrar/Examinations Development and Production
Division (Assistant Registrar/EDPD) also welcomed the Panel and advised them that in addition to
providing support for the finalisation of the syllabus, he would provide guidance for the development
of the assessment for the syllabus.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PANEL MEETING
2. The Assistant Registrar/SCD gave an overview of the objectives of the meeting. These were
to:
(a) revise the syllabus based on data received from teachers, subject specialists and
resource persons; and,
(b) construct Specimen Papers, Keys and Mark Schemes.
SYLLABUS AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
3. The Assistant Registrar/SCD reviewed the role and responsibilities of the Panel Members and
the Convenor. The Panel Members and the Convenor were asked to note the areas of responsibilities
with which they were charged. The responsibilities were discussed and areas of concern clarified by
the Assistant Registrar/SCD. This was done to ensure all parties were clear on the expectations going
forward.
4. The Assistant Registrar /SCD shared with the Panel a PowerPoint presentation which outlined
the syllabus maintenance and implementation processes, and the format of the syllabus. The
presentation also highlighted the political, philosophical and psychological considerations for syllabus
development. These were UNESCO Pillars of Learning, Ideal Caribbean Person, Survival Skills (Wagner);
Twenty-first Century Learning Skills (collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and communication);
Multiple Intelligences (Gardner); Emotional Intelligences (Goleman), the Principles of Constructivism
and the Principles of Constructivism.
5. She informed the members of the Review Committee of the political considerations including
the attributes of the Ideal Caribbean Person which were adopted by the CARICOM Heads of
th
Government at their 18 Summit and the UNESCO Pillars of Learning. The Assistant Registrar/SCD also
outlined the selected attributes from the Ideal Caribbean Person and the UNESCO Pillars of Learning
that the syllabus would develop in students. These are outlined below.
6. The Syllabus would contribute to the development of an Ideal Caribbean Person who:
(a) is emotionally secure with a high level of self-confidence and self-esteem;
(b) sees ethnic, religious and other diversity as a source of potential strength and
richness;
(c) is aware of the importance of living in harmony with the environment;
