We Are One

The walls of the Tunapuna Primary School were as
bright as the sun that was out in its glory on this

beautiful morning. With its spacious classrooms

and new furniture, the school was a stark contrast

to the one that Isabella attended in Venezuela.

The tall, black gate at the front of the school was
a constant reminder that she was safe. The smell

of curried chicken coming from the school’s ‘Hot

Meal’ room provided the calm assurance that she

will not go hungry today. And as she entered her

classroom, she wondered why her classmates
could not be as welcoming as the physical school

          structure itself.

          “Aye Venezuelan,” shouted Jayden. Isabella’s

heart started to race, and it felt like if it was falling

out of her chest. She quickly walked to her seat.

“Aye girl, yuh ain’t hear me calling you?” yelled

Jayden. He rushed towards Isabella and stood

          towering above her.

“No, no, I am sorry,” responded Isabella with a

          quivering voice.
