The Lifestyle and the Culture of the Caribbean

I watched with delight as the ancestors of the

people of today came ashore in small boats

resembling canoes. They spoke in their native

tongues with their baskets full of prized catch.
This would bring rich, tantalizing aromas from

small huts to satisfy its occupants’ souls. The

people of which I speak were the Arawak’s and

Caribs. They occupied the various Caribbean

Islands a long time ago. What saddened me is
that although these people came from the same

Amerindian race, they did not get along. In fact,

they were bitter rivals—arch enemies, and when

they quarreled, it made my blue turquoise waters

          run red.

Following the demise of these captivating

indigenous people, other people came to our

shores from lands far away. They were in search

of the wealth that our lands held hidden beneath
the earth’s core: “Gold, gold!” I could hear the

          strange voices say excitedly.
