ray tube, including control of the intensity. Included
3 1.13 An understanding of the existence of discrete
electron energy levels in isolated atoms (for Included
example, atomic hydrogen) and deduction of how
this leads to spectral lines.
3 2.1 Interpretation of the results of Geiger Marsden
experiment. Included
3 2.4 The experiment includes results for terminal
velocity calculations, size of a drop. Included
3 3.1 define ‘mass defect’ and ‘binding energy’;
Nuclear Stability should be mentioned. Refer to
Specific Objective 4.1. Included
3 3.2 calculate mass defect and binding energy in eV or
joules;
Explanation of the relevance of binding energy Included
per nucleon to nuclear fusion and to nuclear
fission.
3 3.5 represent graphically the relationship
between binding energy per nucleon and nucleon
number; Included
Mention “Island of instability”
3 4.2 Refer to the random nature of radioactive decay
from the fluctuations in count rate. Sketch the
exponential nature of radioactive decay Included
3 4.14 describe the operation of simple detectors.
(For example, G-M tube, spark counter, cloud Included
chamber, ratemeter and scaler).
4. SBA
The objectives and format of the newly included Research project are clearly identified and
has included detailed criteria for marking the research project where each criteria mark has
been identified and allocated appropriately. The mark scheme for the research project was
found to be appropriate for the level and purpose for which it is intended. However, the
heading for criteria number 11 labeled as “Bibliography” should be changed to “References”
th
according to APA 6 edition which is more consistent with standard scientific terminology
used in writing-up research projects papers similar to what this SBA research project
requires.
