Experiencing the Annual ‘Monster’ of the Caribbean

When I got up, it started to rain heavily. It felt like

bullets were being shot onto the roof. My father

arrived with bags full of canned food, water, and

other goods. He was upset that he had not been

able to get the batteries he needed back at the
store but there was no use crying over spilled

milk then. We gathered the food and ate like a

pack of wolves as we prepared for furious

          Hurricane Irma. My parents starved

themselves for a day to save food.

Mom and Dad had prepared a safe hiding place

for us - a closet - if we should need it. I had never

seen inside the spacious closet before. It was like

a whole new world. They had packed in all their
treasured belongings and had left space for us in

the event that we had to hide from the raging

          hurricane.
