CXC Local Registrar

Question: Who is a CXC Local Registrar?
Answer: A CXC Local Registrar is a person appointed by the local Ministry of Education to
administer the Council’s examinations. The office of the CXC Local Registrar is normally located
in the Ministry of Education. In Jamaica however, the CXC Local Registrar’s Office is located at
the Overseas Examinations Commission.

Question: I am the Principal of a school and wish to enquire about one of my students’
registration details. Should I contact the Council directly?
Answer: No, the Council does not engage in direct contact with principals, candidates,
parents, guardians, or teachers. All enquiries must be directed to the Council via the Office of
the Local Registrar.

General Examination Queries:

Question: Is the CSEC Grade III obtained between 1979 and 1997 considered a pass?
Answer: Prior to 1998, a five-point grading system was in place and some employers and
educational institutions recognised a Grade III for the purposes of employment and further
studies especially when candidates presented a combination of subjects ranging from Grades I
– III. In 1998, the Council adopted the six-point grading scheme that recognised Grade III as an
award for employment and further studies.

Question: How many marks do I need to obtain a Grade I pass?
Answer: It is not the policy of the Council to publicise the different grade boundaries. Suffice
to say that the marks for Grade I may vary from one subject area to another but for all subjects,
a Grade I denotes outstanding performance.
