Figure 8-12. Mast goosenecks are a necessity on stayed wing masts; if shrouds were attached to the mast’s sides,
                  the mast could not rotate. Scott Sprague’s ingenious gooseneck for Tumblehome goes things one better, with the
                  addition of a lower shroud spreader bar. This bar allows him to use aft-leading lower shrouds, which ordinary
                  wing masts cannot carry.  The spreader bar is slightly wider than the mast is deep (see top view), so that even
                  when the spar is rotated for running, the wires have a fair lead aft to the chainplates. The running backstays
                  are set up at the base of the spreader bar, along with the forward lower shrouds. When sailing, the leeward
                  runner is slacked, so does not interfere with mast rotation.
