                             CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT
(Report by Mr. G. W. R. Smith, Director of Customs)

The revenue collected by the Customs Department, from all sources, including Boat
Licences, exceeded the amount estimated in the budget by Rs. 15,64,792/-. It is not possible
in this report to show comparisons of income over the previous year, owing to the new system
now being adopted, but in actual fact the income for 1954 was less by Rs. 2,49,294/- than the
income for 1953. The reason for this was the stoppage of work for one week in December, 1954.
With the exception of Tea, the price of which was 60 per cent, dearer than in the previous
year, and coffee which was 15 per cent, dearer, all other commodities showed a downward
trend, Rice being about 40 per cent, cheaper and sugar 25 per cent, cheaper than in the previous
year. It can therefore be assumed that in general the volume of imports was greater than in
     the previous year.
The new Native Craft Pier, 1,200 feet long, is now completed, together with new passenger
examination hall and waiting rooms, and will shortly be used for all passenger traffic.

     Accidents Within Port Limits.
        1. On the 13th November, 1954, a foreign craft which was anchored near Naim, capsized
and sunk owing to rough weather, and was totally destroyed.
        2. On the 13th November, 1954, a foreign craft, laden with a cargo of 200 gallas Basrah
dates, lying at anchor near Naim, was wrecked in a strong shamal. The cargo was damaged.
The Light Tender Vessel Relume carried out her usual visits of inspection to the lights and
     buoys.

     General.
The estimated revenue for 1955, Rs. 95,00,000/-, is, of course, less than the actual revenue
for 1954, and is based on the assumption that the downward trend in prices will continue.
