The electrical Installation for the New Women’s Hospital, now being constructed, was
planned by the Installations Supervisor (Mr. G. W. Taylor), while in London on leave. At the
end of the year good progress was being made by the Contractors who are carrying out this
work under the Department’s supervision.
The Gas/Electricity Project. This scheme suffered a major setback in that the main
generating sets supplied by Messrs. National Gas and Oil Engine Co. could not be operated
satisfactorily on natural gas and despite some six months of effort they had to be operated as
Diesels throughout the Summer. Further experiments and trials were commenced in October
and eventually the engines were made to run on dual-fuel containing 7 per cent diesel oil. This
inability to use gas as specified, has caused considerable financial loss to the Department and it
was the subject of negotiations with the Contractors, which were continuing at the end of the
year.
The Gas Line from the oil field was completed and put into commission during January.
Good progress was made with the new transmission lines and distribution schemes in the
villages.
The 33 KV Lower lines were completed in May and the supply to West Rafaa was switched
on in June. The new supply to Muharraq Town and the Airport was completed and put into
commission in May. The supply to Budaiya was switched on in December and the remainder
of the village schemes were about 75 per cent complete at the year’s end.
Future Prospects. The tremendous demand for electricity supplies continues and future
planning includes an extension to the Manama ‘B’ Power Station incorporating two 6.000KW
Gas Turbines, the first of these to be in commission for April, 1958, and the second to follow
six months later.
As from the 1st January, 1956, it is proposed that the Electricity Undertaking which is
now valued at some 750 Lakhs of Rupees, should become self-supporting and should finance
its future expansion from its own income. A study of this proposal is at present being made
and first indications are very favourable to its adoption.
Transport Division. During July this section was made an entirely separate department
in charge of Mr. J. L. Morris, Transport Superintendent.
