          ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31st DECEMBER 1956

                               The Electricity Undertaking
          The Generation Division. The Old Power Station (Manama "A”), is still in successful
       operation but, as a secondary or Peak Load unit only. The bulk of the load is now generated
       at the New Power Station (Manama “B”), where the Gas/Oil Engines have proved successful.
       During the hot weather period these engines ran non-stop for periods of 2,500 hours and only
       one small power failure was recorded during the year. The total units generated by both
       Power Stations was 25,605,100 an increase of 25 per cent, on the previous year ^nd the supply
       to the Public was maintained without any major interruption. Mr. A. T. Glasbey was
       appointed Generation Engineer on the 7th April and Mr. R. Simms of Messrs. Brush Engineer­
       ing Co., Ltd., who had been Acting Generation Engineer, returned to them on the 1st May.
       Mr. F. S. Andrews was appointed Assistant Generation Engineer on the 4th February.

          Distribution Division. The work of extending and strengthening the distribution network
       in Manama and Muharraq continued and some two miles of new cable was laid and about
       three miles of overhead lines were erected.
          The Contractors completed the Distribution Schemes in the following towns and villages
      and the supply was switched on at the dates shown. East Rafa’a (8th February), Hidd Town
      (26th June), Samahij (9th June), Galali (28th July), Jid Haffs (7th August), Diraz and Beni
      Jumra (28th November).
          Mr. L. A. Boyd was appointed Mains Records Draughtsman on the 24th November.
          Meter and Consumers Division. During the year 2,651 meters were repaired and tested,
      2,426 were issued and 102 were removed from various premises due to reconstruction, etc.
      Fifteen meters were destroyed during the Civil Disturbances of November. Seventy-nine
      consumers complained of excessive electricity consumption and their meters were tested in situ.
      Thirty-two were found to be inaccurate. 2,782 applications for new electricity supply and 718
      for additional supplies were received, representing a total additional load of 5,982 k.w., of
      which 2,871 k.w. was connected. The total number of new applicants awaiting connection
      at the end of the year was 4,202, representing a potential load of 3,110 k.w.
          Mr. R. D. D’Souza was appointed Commercial Assistant, in charge of this Division on
      the 1st January.

          Installations Division. Electrical installation work was carried out in the following
      Government premises :
