                                         OIL INSPECTION DEPARTMENT

                                  (Report by G. B. Thompson, M.Inst.B.E., F.Inst.Pet.)
Production has remained almost constant since 1946, with an average monthly figure of
about 30,000 Barrels of Bahrain Crude. The total for the year 1954 being 1,449,223 Long Tons.

During the year repair work has been carried out on a number of existing wells, and an
increased drilling programme has been operated to maintain the production, and endeavour to
increase it. To this end further efforts are in process to find extensions to the present field,
and both deep drilling and marine drilling are being carried out, but at this stage no definite
                     results have yet been obtained.

The field arrangements for the supply of natural gas to the new power station at Jufair
were completed, and in due course the gas will be available at the power station and possibly
                     in Manama as well.

Refinery throughput increased over the year to a record of 10,373,347 Long Tons, 8,926,621
Long Tons being Imported Crude and the balance of 1,446,726 being Bahrain Crude.
No large scale work was carried out in the refinery during the year, the increased throughput
being mainly due to work put in hand the year before and gradually brought into use.
New extensions are planned and some of the initial work has been started, but it will be
some time before this work is completed.

The supply of products in Bahrain and the Gulf area generally increased mainly on account
of the stopping of supplies from Iran, and the general increase in demand.
The pipelines bringing crude from Arabia have been operating at full capacity during the
year, and there were very few shipments of crude by tanker to Bahrain.
The re-starting of operations in Iran will probably have some effect on the operations in
                      Bahrain during the coming year.

The principle of giving more work to local concerns has been extended and provided that
there is satisfaction, it will continue to be increased.
                                                                               s
Tanker inspections and checks on cargoes have dropped somewhat since last year, but as
this work is on a 24 hour basis, there is still enough work to ensure that the revenue collected
more than covers the cost of the operations of the department.
Graphs showing the refinery throughput and cargo inspection figures over the last five
                     years are appended.
