Eleven Wiring Contractor’s Licences were issued to local merchants, bringing the total to 42.
Licences were also issued to 13 additional Wiremen who had been successful in passing the
Department’s Tests.
In order to cater for the ever increasing work of the Installations Section, Mr. W. Taylor
was promoted to Electrical Installations Supervisor and four Pakistani Wiremen, one Electrical
Fitter and one Palestinian Electrician were engaged, while six Bahrainis, trained in the Depart
ment, were promoted to Wiremen. An outstanding example of the high grade of workmanship
attained by this Section can be seen in His Highness’s new Palace, Gudhaibia, where a compli
cated and extensive electrical system has been very successfully installed, the lighting installation
being particularly effective.
The Gas/EIcctricity Project. The Government’s Consultants and Contracting Engineers,
Messrs. D. and C. and William Press, Ltd., made good progress with the new power scheme
and at the end of the year the new Power Station building was some 75 per cent, complete, the
high voltage Transmission Lines to Rafa’a, Hedd and Budcya were 50 per cent, complete,
new Sub-stations had been erected at Muharraq Town, the R.A.F. Station, and in the Jufair
area ; the Gas Transmission Line was 80 per cent, complete, and the first two of the Generating
Sets in the new Power Station were almost ready for trials.
A certain amount of delay was experienced in the delivery of these two sets from the United
Kingdom Manufacturers and because of this some curtailment in the connection of additional
load to existing consumers was inevitable in July, August and September, the old Power
Station being fully loaded during the exceptionally hot weather prevailing.
The Bahrain Petroleum Company completed the connections to a Gas Well in the Oil Field
and made good progress in laying their section of the Gas Transmission line which was 95 per
cent, complete at the year’s end.
The initial scheme is scheduled for completion during May next year by which time a
considerable proportion of the electricity demanded will be generated from natural gas.
