[with orders] to stand on watch and discover the Turkish vessels
coining from the strait [of Mocha] and to see what there is; and, if
[these cMtures] see such vessels before them, then, to warn the fleet
which will be [waiting] at Muscat.
In the ovent that these ships do not come from the strait [of Mocha],
there will bo much to bo dono against the nouiaques. [Theso nouiaques]
are impudent [people]. A large Portuguese ship, having on board
Amdro Cortes and laden with much fine merchandize, was wrecked on
a sandbank as it came from the island of Macira (Maceira) and was lost
there. The nouiaques took and carried off all tho merchandize in the
ii ship and killed all tho Portuguese on board, leaving no one alive,

& except Amdre Cortes, his wife and one of his daughters, who made
their escape. Amdre Cortes lost all his possessions but, because he

: fought well, ho got away, although he was wounded by eight large
arrows and ho could not reach his own pardo until he was carried there.
In addition [the nouiaques'] attacked a Muslim terrada and wounded
some of tho people on board who resisted them. And because of these
and other happenings [the Portuguese], each year, send [their fleet],
with the help of Our Lord, to plunder tho coast of the nouiaques and
to burn the t err ados [of the nouiaques], as much as possible. And this
fleot, each year, will watch over the merchant ships; it will, serve two

purposes for His Highness now-to go against the fustas of the Turks
and [also] to sail wherever it has gone in past years.
1 I shall write to Your Lordship, by other means, more about this
land. I kiss the hands of Your Lordship. May your life and the affairs
of Our Lord [the King] prosper. From Hormuz the 23^ of June, in
[the year] 1547.
