           2.  A place with a formally recognised neutrality and inviolability where,
         for example, crimes against persons may have special punishments attached
         to them in order to restore the violated security of the place. My informant
         seemed to suggest that the markets had no such formal protected status but
         were merely regarded as neutral territory in order to facilitate trade.
