“Pish maws.” These arc said to bo in demand in Bombay. Pishing opera*
linns were, during the year, generally more extensive. Please see remark®
about the import of “ Pig lead."
“ Ghi.” This shows a slight falling of. What has been exported represents
the last season’s export about May 1008 from Kowoit sources. Nothing was
exportable this season.
“ Oliver thread.” This could not be disposed of in Koweit and was there*'
fore taken to Linga.
“Hides and Gkins” shows a falling off of Its. 2,500 and 13 attributed to
the few animals slaughtered in Koweit
“Pearls.” This shows an increase of Bs. 1,87,500. Owing to low prices
pearls were not sold in Bahrain. They wore brought over to Koweit and taken
to Bombay.
“Bice.” Wlmt appears in these returns is the amount taken by the
Sheikh of Koweit to Muhammerah for distribution amoiig the fighting men
of the Sheikh of Muliammerah.
“ Suit. ” This is an experiment. Twenty hags salt were shipped to Calcutta,
and it will be seen lioreafter how this new venture turns out.
“ Shark fins. ” Thcro is an appreciable increase of Es. C,5C0 under this
bead. Compare remarks uuder “ fish maws.”
“ Specie!” Tliis shows an increase of Rs. 3,23,897 over previous year’s
returns. Of the Its. 10,21,019 shown in the returns Rs. 8,10,000 represents
the amount taken to MuhnintucraU by the Sheikh of Koweit to pay for the
landed property, he purchased up the river. The balance went to India and
other ports. It is said that Hawalas were readily procurable as pearl money
was lying in Bombay aud therefore it was unnecessary to remit specie paying
freight and undergoing risk.
“ Astrakhans. ” A small parcel of the skins was taken by a merchant
trading in Muscat for samples.
Export by buggalows.
“Animals.” This shows a largo drop of Es. 11,000. A3 already ex
plained elsewhere slaughter animals were expensive and few came into Koweit
and therefore less export.
“ Arms and ammunition.” There is a large decrease of Es. 4,G9,000 la
this trade.- The activity of the Belgians up the river has crippled this trade
as some valuable consignments were seized. Merchants are holding large
Mocks, which they cannot get rid of. Most of the arms exported now go north
.by land to Khamisiya on tho Euphrates and then onwards.
" Astrakhans ” There are large stocks of these skins held up with hopes
of advance in prices. The market for.astrakhans has been very slack during
the year.
“Barley ” was not imported owing to bad harvest in Persia and therefore
<none was exported.
“ Pish oil. ” Es. 9,000 worth of the oil imported was available for export
to Mubammerah and Basrah.
“ Ghi ” shows a very large decrease. Such ghi as was exported from
‘Koweit by sailing boats has already appeared in the import returns.
“ Goat hair. ” Less was.imported during the year and tho export shows
a falling oil-of Es 27,500 said to be due to -tho disturbed state of El Hassa
w hero nearly all this export goes.
“Hides .and skins’’shows no import of .any value. The large drop
is explained by tbe fact that few animals were slaughtered.
