The most striking factor when observing the
material is, however, the wide-spread ante mor
tem loss of molars (fig. 3), already lost before the
individual was fully grown. The reason for this was
undoubtedly the high frequency of caries (fig. 4) • .** ■. •

such as Dilmun's famous sweet dates which were
used for making jam, wine and beer. Figs, raisins,
baked cakes and bread were also consumed.

Consequently, toothache was a common tor )r~
ment, treated by extraction of the bad tooth,
probably by means of an elevator. No forceps have
as yet been found. Fig. 5 shows in the middle, two vc=
‘elevators' excavated in Bahrain. The instruments
on the extreme right and left are modern elevators. VI
