recent years the illegal manufacture of liquor has increased

very considerably. A number of raids were made by the
Police during the year and heav^ sentences were imposed on
                         consumers and makers of liquor.

A case which attracted much attention both locally
and outside Bahrain was one in which a local merchant was

convicted of importing two cultured pearls, one of v/hich he
sold knowing it to be cultured. The merchant was a brother-

Rs. 3000/- and forbidden to trade in pearls in Bahrain for
                          ttew years, * /35t).

The imposition of this sentence was greatly
appreciated by the pearling community who realise the
danger to their trade which results from traffic in cultured
                          pearls.
