ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Much of the ground work for the present study was undertaken as part of my
studies at McGill University. I am therefore indebted to all the help and
assistance I received there, in particular from Drs Charles Adams, Abu
Hakima and Donald Little. Without the support of the Ministry of Higher
Education and the King ‘Abd al-‘Az!z University my studies would not have
               been possible.
I am also pleased to express my thanks to my publisher, Mr John Knight-Smith
Smith of Luzacs, and to the editor, Leonard Harrow, for their patience and
help in producing such a pleasing volume.
I trust all those who have helped me will accept my thanks—any errors are
               mine and not theirs.

                                                                    Z M al-Rashld
