Introduction

                         was the truth. And while I may be wrong in my choice of what
                         appears most probably to have been the truth, I would certainly
                         be wrong if I instead gave the impression that the people living
                         at the time had the same doubts as we. I have tried as best I can,
                         in italics at the end of each chapter, to confess to what degree I
                         have misled my readers as to the reliability of my “facts.”
