156 The Chariots

coast of Peru the enigmatic fishermen-gardeners still dwell upon
their shell heaps, now a good twelve feet higher with the debris
                    of three hundred fifty years.

We have paused at 1650 b.c., and for a chapter have bor
rowed the chariot of Apollo, surveying the whole world from the
viewpoint of the gods. But to the people living, dying, and
being born in 1650 b.c. there was no perceptible pause. Life went
on, and with it history. It is time that we descend to earth again.
