348 THE LEGAL STATUS OF THE ARABIAN GULF STATES

interim arrangement regarding Abu Musa will continue to be
                  respected by both parties.
As regards the Union of United Arab Emirates, of which Sharjah
is a member, it does not appear that it has announced its position
towards the Abu Musa Agreement, and it remains doubtful,
therefore, whether the UEA has legally succeeded to the obligations
                  under the said Agreement.

Iran’s acceptance of ‘‘the arrangements for Abu Musa as set out in the enclosure
to your letter of 25th November 1971”.
Accordingly, on 26 November, the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Alec
Douglas-Home sent his reply to the letter of the then Ruler of Sharjah , Shaikh
Khalid Mohamed al-Qasimi, in which he enclosed the Iranian Government s
acceptance of the arrangements as contained in the "Memorandum of
                    Understanding”.
