                    M. J. S. Allen is a member of the Diplomatic Service who before joining travelled
                     extensively in Jordan and the Arabian Peninsula where he gained practical
                     experience of falconry.
                     G. R. Smithy after taking a degree in Arabic at the School of Oriental and
                     African Studies, University of London, served in the Aden Student’s Office and
                     as a Political Officer in South Arabia. He is now Assistant Lecturer in Arabic at
                     Cambridge University.
                     Dr J. H. Stevens is a Lecturer in Social Sciences in the Faculty of Geography,
                     Durham University. He is regarded as a world authority on arid soils.
                     Mohammad Morsy Abdullah is Director of the Centre for Research and
                     Documentation, Ministry of Cabinet Affairs, Abu Dhabi. He is at present at
                     Cambridge where he is completing a doctoral thesis on British policy in the
                     Trucial States.
                     Dr James Kirkman had considerable experience of the Middle East as an
                     archaeologist and official before becoming Warden of the Coastal Historical Sites
                     of Kenya. While in this post he published archaeological and historical works
                     particularly in connection with the Arab city of Gedi. He has just published a
                     study of the Portuguese fort at Mombasa. He has now retired to live in
                     Cambridge.
                     Robert Wilson has just completed his B.A. degree in Arabic at Cambridge. In
                     1972/3 he lived in Hajjah for nine months teaching English, and intends to study
                     the historical geography of the Yemen.
