Barrett’s despatch, 385-S of the 20th August, 1929, of
riiich a copy is flagged (B.420) below. After conoultatiqn
with the Foreign Office and Colonial Office it hue now
boon- deeidod to approve generally the recommendations
contained in that despatch (subject to a suggestion as
regards the substitution of Sudanese for Indian police).
It will be remembered that Colonel Barrett (paragraph 0)
was of opinion that no alteration should be made at the
present time; that Mr. de Grenier might ultimately be
replaced, possibly by one of the Sheikhly family (paragraph
9), but that (paragraph 16) the period required for
training "cannot bo less than 7 years from now". In
these circumstances, no objection to our approving tho
continued retention of Mr. de Grenier in tho Sheikh's
service seems to arise. It is unnecessary to specify .
any term, in view of the fact that his contract is for
an indefinite period, terminable at three months’ notice
from either party. In view of the concurrence of the
II Imperial Departments in the general policy set out in
Colonel Barrett’s despatch, it is unnecessary to consult
them on the present proposal. \ draft to the Government
-
. of India, sanctioning, is submitted.
