Mains Department.—This section has carried out a very heavy programme of work this
year. Nine new substations were erected in various districts of Manamah, five existing substations
were extended and some five miles of High Tension cables were laid underground connecting these
substations to the Power Stations. New Low Tension distributors were erected in several districts
and new street lighting was provided where considered necessary. 301 new consumers were connected
during the year and the total additional load connected was 568 kW.
Meter Department.—This department is responsible for the testing and repairing of all
types of meters and the maintenance of all records in connection therewith. Records of all con
sumers and apparatus connected to the supply arc also compiled by this department to enable statistics,
vital to the efficiency of the undertaking, to be obtained. During the year 529 meters were repaired,
tested and reissued for service and 1,405 applications for electricity supply were received. At the
end of the year some 600 applications were still outstanding, but it is expected that these will be
       supplied during 1370.
Wiring, Sales and Service Department.—Electrical installations for the following premises
were carried out during the year :—
Indian Staff Quarters at the Government Hospital.
Mess Block and Stores at the Government Hospital.
            Power Station Extension.
New Bahrain Government Flats (Dilmun House).
            Medical Inspection Building.
Part of Bahrain Government Boys' School Hostel.
Majlis and Dining Room at the Manamah Palace.
            Majlis at the Rafaa Palace.
The Printing Press at the Bab-al-Bahrain.
            Laboratory at the Government Hospital.
            The Budeya Garden House.
            New Offices at the Fort.
The Aramco House and B. P. House on the Sea Road.
Six wiring contractors licenses were issued to local merchants bringing the total to sixteen.
Licenses were also issued to five additional wiremen.
Shaikh Hamad Bridge.—On the 6th of Dil Haj a locally owned motor launch entering the
channel before the bridge had been fully opened collided with the wedge-driving shaft op the underside
of the bridge and caused extensive damage. Repairs have been effected, with great difficulty, and
the structure is again operating satisfactorily. Normal maintenance work has continued throughout
       the year.
Workshops Department.—This department continued to carry out new work and repairs
for all Government departments and, in addition, many private jobs were undertaken for local firms.
Shaikh Hamad Bridge was successfully repaired by the workshop staff after accidental damage. Work
carried out for Government departments produced a revenue of Rs. 32,512-8-0 while private jobs
       produced Rs. 13,009-13-0.
Transport Department.—Repairing and servicing of all Government vehicles was main
tained. Due to the lack of efficient staff the work was not of a very high standard and, with the
yearly increase in the number of vehicles maintained, urgent consideration must be given to the
provision of up-to-date facilities and skilled staff. 25 new vehicles were purchased and ten vehicles
were sold or written off. The total number of vehicles in service at the year-end was 76.
